The Real Reason We're Celebrating

Three... two... one.

Bells tolled, fireworks exploded, hands raised, and drinks spilled. Pubs, bars, streets and homes were filled with music and cheering. After a difficult year, everyone had let their hair down for one special moment; strangers danced, friends hugged, and couples kissed.

Yes, it was the start of the January transfer window, and Arsenal had business to do. For the next 31 days, the rumours would inundate newspapers, websites and blogs, turning even the most cynical, realistic fans into naive, excitable children. Throughout the month, Gooners would babble amongst themselves, building up one another's expectations that Arsene would surprise them and pull off an unthinkable signing. Maybe Giorgio Chiellini? Maybe David Villa!

But in reality, this could be our quietest ever January window. Despite Mikael Silvestre featuring as regularly this season as Emmanuel Adebayor in a team-building exercise, and Philippe Senderos umming and arring about whether to keep his front-row season ticket, Wenger insists he won't be selling anyone. I'm hoping to see Senderos stay, because I think he deserves a couple of chances to show how he's come along in the last 18 months, but I'm less enthusiastic about Silvestre. His pace is going, he lags behind the first-team back four in quality, and his sole purpose seems to be leading the youngsters in our Carling Cup team. Throw in what I would assume is a fairly sizeable wage, and we could be getting more for our money.

However, if Arsene wants to avoid disrupting the squad with replacements, I can appreciate his logic. After all, we're doing well considering our injuries, and Man City have shown how unreliable a team can be without sufficient time to gel.

The key area where we are most likely to see some activity is up front. With Wenger indicating that Bendtner won't be available for a while yet, he would probably be right to seek some cover, as fielding three forwards under 6 feet is unlikely to yield goals against certain teams. However, with the futures of players like Eduardo and Carlos Vela - and indeed Bendtner - to keep in mind, a loan move may be a better idea than a permanent addition. That said, Klaas Jan Huntelaar would be the most likely option in this scenario, and personally I think he would be perfect. His Milan record has been somewhat crippled by the fact that many of his appearances have come through late, time-wasting substitutions, but he still enjoys a feared reputation as a clinical poacher. His height and world-class finishing make him an ideal replacement while van Persie's back at the home.

Should this not be possible, I would like to see Wenger go in for either Edin Dzeko or Carlton Cole. Both would almost certainly have to be permanent signings, although with West Ham in the mess they're in, you never can be quite sure. Dzeko looks like what we need: a towering striker who can fit into a fluid style of play. His finishing is reminiscent of Henry, and although his pace isn't, he would have the players around him to make up for it. Carlton Cole would be significantly cheaper, and wouldn't be cup-tied in Europe, which might make him a more realistic signing. He is Arsene's kind of target man, with a team ethic and passing style more akin to van Persie than Adebayor, although his athleticism could make him a good partner for the Dutchman when he returns. He's on and off the injury table at the moment, but that would make him all the more welcome at Arsenal.

In any case, it doesn't look like anyone's leaving, so at least this should be a less nervy transfer window for us than most. Arsene will be concentrating on the FA Cup match at West Ham on Sunday, so let's think about that first, and hope Carlton Cole isn't available.

Huntelaar is the best choice out of that lot, mainly because a short term loan is what we need. No point in stuffing our forward line. Good article

We don't need anyone up front. We're scoring for fun at the moment.

For me, swap Silvestre and Senderos. Senderos has shown zero commitment with his comments, and doesnt fit into our ball-playing back 4. Silvestre is slower but works his nuts off, and you pointed out in the Liverpool game that he played well.

dont u guys understand, out of all our strikers only van persie can lead the line alone, bendtner can do it but not now maybe after 2 years plus van persie will never play a whole season cuz he is injury prone so we need a strong, tall, skillfull player like chamakh or dezko.

Silvestre is utterly pointless. He's made two league starts and didn't play to an Arsenal standard in either, and AW doesn't seem to have any use for him other than knocking up the average age in Carling Cup matches and making up the numbers. Was really unimpressed by him last year, definitely Senderos over Silvestre.

Whoever wrote the 3rd comment, what are you on? How unambitious are you? Silvestre is a joke, United are probably still laughing, he doesn't work hard either, never closes down when he should and always gets beaten to the ball

What sort of deluded fool would defend Silvestre. He can't even defend himself... (ha)
- imagine what would happen if we had him at CB against one of the top 7 teams, it would be a disaster, unimportant CL matches and Carling Cup matches aren't going to convince me after his shockers last season when it actually mattered.
- le boss bought him to be one of our ball-playing defenders, and he can't do it. not as mobile as Gallas or Verm
- Silvestre is the one with the commitment problem. Senderos wants first team football and has done well in his few games this season - Silvester is happy to be a back-up and nothing more, which is why he never looks like he gives a shit

We do need a strike.

To be honest, how many goals we scored in the two games following VPS injuried?

The answer is zero.

Currently, Arsenal is in top form but how long can it be kept?

A big striker is the best solution and it makes the squad bigger

exactly, we need a tall striker who can give a new dimension to our game like scoring goals from headers, even fabregas said that cuz u cant win all the games wit passing through ur oppenents defence, we need to be dangerous arially too.plus what if arshavin gets injured. we will be doomed.

So what if we didn't score for 2 matches on the bounce after RVP got injured. We've scored 16 since then. In 7 matches. That's more than 2 per match. I don't think this team needs any more players. We've got a squad that is arguably bigger and better than both Chelski's and United's. Come on you gunners, bring the title to the Ems this year :)

Oh and Silvestre played well at left back against Hull City, and he also played in our 2-1 home win against Man United last season at centre back. He's a decent back up which is exactly what we need.

Huntelaar can't move because he moved in the summer. I know someone out there argues that he moved last january but you can't move twice in the one season so thats out the window. When you look at whats out there, wenger has ruled out chamakh because bordeaux won't sell, dzeko too pricey in le boss's words, cole is on the treatment table and we need someone now and huntelaar can't move. All points to gignac who i saw play twice against ireland so i can't judge.

Buy a decent keeper. Ammonia will not do for a club of our magnitude & aspirations.
Big chunky centre forward would be a lovely bonus, but not a must, cos le boss ain't gonna fork out the kind of cash for the calibre that's of any good.
Strong enforcer would be much more beneficial. It doesn't matter if he's DC or DMC, as long he's big & mean & eats children for breakfast.

haha senderos season ticket. but that kinda raises the question, shouldnt he be the one who we should worry about paying!
