The media has apparently got ahead of themselves in the Chris Smalling situation. Roy Hodgson was interviewed over the defender's potential move yesterday, stating that a bid had been accepted from Manchester United and that he 'believes' Smalling has agreed terms with the club; however, he has not completed his medical yet. Even the BBC announced his signature, breaking their policy of waiting to announce a player's transfer until after he has featured in about five competitive fixtures with his new team.
The media is tearing United to pieces, and it seems utterly bizarre that a club over £700m in debt is still signing new players without at least selling some of their current squad first. The change in the state of their finances since the Glazers' takeover can be compared roughly to the career path of Eric Djemba-Djemba, and it looks like things will only get worse for them.
There was an interesting piece in the Telegraph yesterday by Paul Marshall, a British hedge fund owner and philanthropist - working in his profession, he should know what he's talking about when it comes to obscenely rich Americans destroying businesses in this country. He pointed out that in 2005 Manchester United were completely debt free, and one of the most financially stable clubs in the world - but now United and their holding company are £716.5m in the red. Malcolm Glazer and his family "have saddled the company with debt close to twice the annual turnover and over five times the underlying profits."
You might recall that the Glazers' takeover bid in 2004 was initially rebuffed, with chief executive David Gill telling them that the resulting debt would create problems - their plan for the takeover didn't seem financially viable. But the Glazers came back and successfully bought the club with a new plan based on the use of 'payment-in-kind' (PIK) notes, which could later be converted to shares. The notes were labelled as equity rather than debt.
However, the problem was that interest on these notes could reach 20%, a sidenote which benefited the three hedge funds that invested the money, but would eventually be catastrophic for both United and the Glazers. In 2006, the Glazers reimbursed half of the PIK notes, but the premium paid to the hedge funds and subsequent restructuring increased the debt to £660m. In 2010, the debt is well over £700m.
From a football perspective, it's pretty shocking. Between 2005 and 2009, Manchester United's holding company Red Football Joint Venture Limited has spent over £260m servicing the debt, meaning that Manchester United Plc has faced debt costs averaging £40m per year since the takeover. So money is literally pouring out of United's 'football budget' into the pockets of the bankers.
And apparently, the worst is yet to come. They might have raised £500m from the bond issue last week to pay off some of the current debt, but the club will now be paying annual interest charges of £60m (£40m on the bonds, £20m on PIK); and the Glazers are even entitled to withdraw £140m from Manchester United as dividends to pay the holding company's debts. Marshall insists that the interest payments are only just covered by the club's annual profits, so "Manchester United will never realistically be able to pay off the debt".
If Arsenal were in this position, we would be outraged. I know they might be annoyed that an Arsenal blog is talking about this, but I can understand the United fans' fury over what is happening to their club. Marshall reckons the fans will have to buy the club, and it looks like the supporters who reacted to the 2005 takeover by branching off to form FC United of Manchester had a point. It just goes to show that we really do take for granted the meticulous financial planning over recent years by Arsene Wenger and the board.
At the moment, other clubs have been hit hard by the global financial meltdown - Portsmouth were given winding up orders to pay off their debt to other clubs, in addition to a transfer embargo. While United's debt hasn't yet reached the point where they would suffer such punishments, it doesn't look like spending £8m on a young player is the best idea right now. However, as Smalling won't be joining until next season, it suddenly looks like there might even be some substance to the rumours about Vidic leaving, which previously seemed to have about as much truth to them as Harry Redknapp's latest correspondence with HM Revenue & Customs.
Anyway, back to Arsenal.
If we really have missed out on Chris Smalling, there could be problems for our defence next season. Wenger yesterday clarified that Philippe Senderos will not be offered a new contract, which would suggest that he might still be after a new centre-back. Considering both Gallas and Silvestre will currently be out of contract in the summer, he will have to act fast to sort out new deals and make sure we won't be short at the back next season; although Djourou is yet to return from injury and Havard Nordveit will be back from loan.
As for this evening, the squad is looking a lot stronger. The first XI will be restored, including Bakary Sagna who has recovered from his shoulder injury. Nicklas Bendtner will be on the bench after three months out, and he should be joined by Samir Nasri.
Here's hoping for a good result at Villa Park to get us ready for another six-pointer on Sunday...

Arsene Wenger is a genius dealing with the club money. We're in the best position out of anyone to get thru the recession. And still going for the title. Dunno what Kreonke will do with us tho
There's no reason to be graetful to Wenger as none of this has really got anything to do with Wenger. Takeovers are adopted at boardroom level, the manager of the club is not invited to give his opnion - it's not his job. However, if Wenger wants to save all his transfer money and give it back to the board so they can pay debt off quicker I am sure they are happy with that - but it really depends on how much they care about winning trophies.
Wenger pissing me off, once again he has lied to us, last year the promise of 2 WC signings - none, the summer a promsise of a DM/CM- none, Jan window - a ST or DM -none.
Least have the balls to either say yes or not, Arsene I don't trust.
Wenger's penny pinching almost cost Arsenal their place in the Champions League last year. Losing that sort of revenue would have been a diaster for the club. So I think they would rather he spent money and won them trophies than take stupid gambles with Arsenal's future like he did last season.
Great post!
Wenger and the board would never have let a hairbrained scheme like the Glazers' take over. People don't seem to realise he's involve with the board more than we think.
Yeah, he diced with our CL future, but signing Arshavin put us comfortably in fourth place. No one remembers 2005-6 just cos we made it to the final, but we wouldt have made it to the next CL had Spurs not f*cked it up.
Finally, some common sense. United fan in peace!!
You should read some of the balls on the Utd blogs today, a lot of our fans seem to think that just because we're top of the league everything will magically be okay.
Well done and thanks for not rubbing it in. We'll still get you on Sunday ;)
Great post! Again Wenger has been proven astute and absolutel acting in the interest of the club. He knew he would take criticism from the media and ignorant fans, as some of the above posts demonstrate. But Arsenal are here, secure, with the best young team in Europe, well run, playing great football and ready for a great future. I love Wenger, he has made the club what it is in the 10 plus years he has been in charge through a great transfer policy.
"However, if Wenger wants to save all his transfer money and give it back to the board so they can pay debt off quicker I am sure they are happy with that" (Anonymous @ 14:54).
The only problem with your logic is that, under the terms of the bond that Arsenal have in place, a minimum of 75% of all proceeds from sales MUST be reinvested in the squad. (either purchases or improved contracts for current players).
If we don't seem to be spending the £40m from the Summer, it is probably because the club are spending the money on increased wages in order to offset the April increase in top rate to 50%. I believe this issue is going to bite the bums of a lot of clubs in the next few months.
Critics of Wenger are generally short sighted idiots in love with the idea of mercenary teams - go cheer for ManCiti or Chelski if that's your preference. Granted, a lot of Wenger's prudence has been forced on him by the board, but he's done marvels with a limited budget, unlike that boob in Liverpool who also has had a limited budget, but spent extremely poorly and has no youth in the hopper to speak of.
Consider this - when the stadium debt is paid down, Arsenal may become one of the five richest clubs in the world, and provided that greed doesn't suck all the funds out of the club, and we should have more than enought to pay top transfer fees and top wages. Our long term future is very bright.
look thats the point we wouldnt suffer if we missed out on champions league football sure we would lose 20m but we will still have dosh to burn to by players to get us back into the top four but clubs like liverpool man u and chelsea would suffer hugly havin to sell top players to service their debt.
we are the only club plaaying within our means we are the only club turning out ever increasing profit every april (Flnancial Year) so dont be so pecimistic towards a management team and a board who are making all the right moves.
Also i dont think its stan kronke's intension to take over the club he is happy being the clubs major share holder pleased with how the club is run and wants to maintain the clubs self sustainability, plus why would he want to get himself in massive debt to take the club over all he is trying to do is stick himself between arsenal and usmanov so that that dodgy uzbek cant get his oily hand on the club
Excuse me fellas but isnt stan Kroenke exactly the same as the Glazers,if not then please enlighten me where the difference is.
any 1 who is pissed off with wenger start supporting other club you all think spending money will bring success remember how many of our 1st x1 players is injured but we are still title contender.give credit to managers.
look at others club manu 30 mil for bervatov,32 million for robino at man city.if you believe spending money bring sucess then wake up and look at tottenham every year they spend crazy money but end of the season they are always in mid.arsenal is the only club spends less and gets result.
we need world class keeper that's it until end of the seoson
look again look at my comment ay 15:30 if stan was going to take overthe club he would have by now if arsenal win the league or champions league the share prices for arsenal would rocket hes happy as the clubs major shareholder and happy with how the club is run
I just hope that some of the financially challenged who continue to make hugely ignorant and more than a little depressing comments on the lack of spending on players, run their own lives with as little prudence and thought as they suggest Arsenal should do. When they are made homeless as a result of their own profligacy one assumes they will no longer have the opportunity to access a computer and we wil no longer have to suffer "Death by Championship Manager" from the throng of these financial illiterates.
There is a reason that clubs as varied as Man U and Liverp[ool on the one hand and West Ham and Portsmouth on the other are in such dire straits financially. It is the same reason that we are not. Personally I do not believe in hocking the future in order to be able to tell my mates that we are currently top of the league. So were Crystal Palace once. All seems such a long time ago, doesn't it.....
I hope it never happens but Arsene has got no influence on financial matters other than not spending the transfer budget he gets. I would be more concerned when the ground is paid for because then you have a hugely valuable asset debt free just about right for remortgaging. I hope it never happens but to imply that Manchester Uniteds financial plight is someway connected to Fergies spending habits is well at best naive. Are there not two sharks circling at the moment who knows wether they are letting the board pay for the stadium before they make their move........let's hope not
Not sure if it is my computer, but whenever I come on this website, the first few comments are always written over the end of the article. Which is pretty annoying, especially today, as it was an excellent post..
I don't know why AW has talked about shopping at Waitrose in the past surely he should have referred to Tesco value products for Arsenal.
We love him really.
kroenke does not believe in debt financed takeovers, thare is the main difference as far as i can see.
erp
Stan likes to buy clubs and make money by utilising there physical assets such as stadium usage advertising and image rights. He is totally commited to the teams and can often befound in a Colorado dressing room. However due to his willingness to usage the prestige of a club he rarley let's the team suffer. The difference between him and the glazers is he is a sports business man where as the glazers are money men. ( please note this is only my interpritation of the money and I haven't done exstensive research, just picked bits up here and there.)
Excellent article! Only in the future will the real importance of Wenger & the boards work become apparent. I feel ashamed when I hear Arsenal fans bitching about him. Buy Buy Buy they always cry. Build Build Build Wenger cries and I'm deffo with him. Forget about chavs & citeh, they aren't in the real world. For others like Man U, Liverpool,Pompei, West Ham etc the real world is a very cold place to be. High finances bring high stakes and we are the only ones laughing through this recession. Our club is priming itself to dominate big time, I really believe that. Everything is coming together - The stadium, the young, highly talented squad, the manageable mortgage etc etc. Trouble is people are brainwashed by SSNews, TalkShite radio etc. They promote this instant and dramatic environment where you lose 1 game to chavs in November and thats it can't win the league no way, then crisis time cos been 4 seasons and on and on. Have faith and be glad that we have serious, sensible people at the helm. The idea that Wenger just stubbornly refuses to spend money out of sheer pig headedness is totally ridiculous. Read through the lines Arsenal fans and be very happy for what you've got. If you don't then you might get what you wish for and then all us strong, faithful fans will be gutted and in my case very angry. If you can't get off the Buy Buy Buy bandwagon then just please shut up.
Wenger has a degree in financial managment as well as being fluent in at least five langagues. He has great respect for japan and their work ethic. I beleive he was extremly influncial in how and where we spent in the new training ground and stadium. Even the board are a little in awe of the man and they give him carte blance, because they know he would use his responsibility wisely and without any self interest. ( unlike harry redhanded or benitez)
Philip surely you must realise how stupid that comment is. Just so as you can feel the glow of winning CL or PL you wouldn't mind putting the club you are supposed to love in serious jeopardy. Thats like throwing away a 20 year marriage built on love with kids etc to feel 'The Glow' of some young silly tart at work. Very brief pleasure followed by long time of misery. Grow up!
I am Manchester United fan and before the assholes turned up we had the treble and were financially stable but I would be happy enough to give one CL back and have our independance back yeah we are top of the league but we are "monumentally" f@@@ked LUHG
well said anon 15:59 take a look at it this way gooners all we have to worry about is when were gunna win summit next not if we dont win/qualify were finished
i feel sorry for all those liverpool and man u fans having to stand outside their grounds hold up a banner in the freezing cold stating save our club or word to that affect
oh well time to have another warm cupper play on the xbox and hope we win the league this year
HAHAHA!
On the xbox is the only way you will win the league this year CTID
Oh yeah who'd you support 16.09?
I agree with a lot of what you say. The Glazers are impoverishing Man United and our transfer spending is going to be very constrained for the forseable future. But it's not true to say we (United) can't afford the odd £8 million here and there or even rather more than that. The club is not directly liable for the PIK debts and the Glazers have many options as to how they pay those off. The £45m interest payments can be easily coped with as long as we keep qualifying for Europe.
These debts aren't new - they have been there for five years and people keep saying that the sky is falling in, but it isn't. The fact we are still spending shows this. But we are going to have to try and operate a lot more like Arsenal - buy promising youngsters and develop them rather than buying (expensive) ready-made stars.
@16.17
Didn't your last financial results suggest that you only made £7m profit total while making a net figure of £80.5m on player sales? (Figures from memory)
that's in a season when you won the league and made the final of the champions league. If you don't reach such heights this season then who are you going to sell to balance the books? Rooney's great but not £80m great and with the current Man Utd team, if you did sell him (which I don't think you will) then it might make next season a bit squeaky bum time.
Go support spuds or chavs if you can't support Arsene FC
He is so good that he doesn't need to prove it by winning silverware anymore.
Balancing the books but not producing results on the pitch is the best way to run a football club.No doubt.
I mean if we had got a WC DM and CB last year or a WC striker the year before we may have got their transfer fees back in winning a trophy or 2.
I know there is no guarantee buying means trophies but I can guarantee not spending,as we have learned from our barren 4yrs and counting, definitely means we don't win.
Being unbalanced isn't the work of a genius, far fucking from it.
Thats what he isn't... Balanced
But in saying that,I can't help love the egomaniac any less.
OOOhhh shit guess I gotta go support the spuds now
Why don't you just support your team and stop moaning 16.48? He's the manager, you're not so get over it and stop being so short sighted. 4 years you make it sound like a lifetime. It really isn't just about trophies we are putting in spade work for the long term. You really want us to be throwing loads of money about? Have you seen the silly money players are going for? They're wages too! I bet you were gutted when the mancs bought Berbatov last year. Oh I'm so jealous they're buying a 32 mill player boo hoo. He's flopped! Wenger exists in a 'real world' reality not this weird, media driven, (i bet you listen to Talkshite) circus, which really is unbalanced.
